Happy Birthday, Alaska! October 18, 2012

145 years ago today, Alaska was purchased from Russia by William Seward for about two cents an acre. At 586,000 square miles, that’s a BIG pile of pennies. Alaska became a state in 1959.

Yeah, time is not kind to mortal flesh. Neither is gravity. I remember dirt streets in Juneau, and going to the museum in the Territorial Capitol Building. Same old building still in use today. I worked in it when I was young. (sob!) Now, the museum is in its own building, but it was really something for us kids to try to lift those little cannonballs. :o)

Happy Birthday! When I was born, there were only 49 states. Damn, I feel old.
